Joel grew up in rural Mexico as the child of missionaries. After first learning to speak a mountain dialect of Spanish as a child, he later studied “proper” Spanish in Chihuahua, Mexico while enrolled in boarding school.
Unexpectedly, speaking a second language is what led Joel to discover his calling in education. In 2002, Joel was asked to teach conversational Spanish to prepare college students for cross-cultural outreaches. After this experience, he decided to pursue a degree to become an educator.
For the last 20 years, he has served as a teacher, administrator, and accreditation liaison in biblical and theological higher education, primarily within the Calvary Chapel family of churches where he was President of Calvary Chapel Bible College in Murrieta, California.
Joel has also served as an ordained pastor, first in children’s ministry & then as an assistant pastor. Along with his wife, Ashley, Joel was the co-founder of a church-based foster care and adoption ministry. Joel & Ashley have six children, by birth and adoption.
Currently, Joel serves as Academic Dean of Redemption Seminary, a competency-based graduate school of biblical studies and ministry, where students grow using learning resources from Logos Bible Software and Mobile Ed, personal mentoring with professors and a self-paced curriculum that integrates their studies with their current life and ministry setting.
